Deborah Tyler-Bennett and the Nottingham Festival of Words

Poem: Homage to Walker’s Workers

Debbie Bryan studio & Shop was thrilled to host a poetry reading by local poet Deborah Tyler-Bennett, whom was also a writer-in-residence for the Nottingham Festival of words. If you were unable to attend this evening, you can find a video here

Here is what Deborah had to say about her experience of the festival;

I really enjoyed being Writer in Residence at Nottingham’s first Festival of Words.

Over the festival weekend I got to read at Debbie Bryan’s wonderful shop, conduct workshops and drop-in sessions for writers at the Newton Building, and work on poems I’d been writing based-on images and ideas from Nottingham Trent’s Lace Archive, run by the incredibly encouraging Amanda Briggs-Goode and team.

I’d already written two poems for the festival, one ‘Love and Lace’ and a short poem ‘Nottingham Shuttle’ for the festival postcard. To both I’d added words and phrases gleaned from the archive, and these also appear in poems below. The ‘beleaguered city’ in the last poem, was inspired by a ghost story by the nineteenth-century Scottish writer, Margaret Oliphant.

You’ll be able to read more about Deborah’s experience of the Nottingham Festival of Words in a later blog post, but for now we’re proud to present Deborah’s poem “Homage to Walker’s Workers”.

It passed through calloused hands, delicacy free-
falling. Embroidered wool, mosaic in imitation lily,
wide-mouthed peony, moss, beaded-vermicelli’s
lugworm casts.

Sometimes, its handling a kind of love,
knowing shining-girls never saw the graphite,
pre-bleached state an intimacy between lace
and handler.

Next seen on magazine or mannequin,
all graft rinsed-out, this just the way of it …

Come that photograph, workers’ stolid forms
knee-to-dimpled-knee, scrubbed, smiling,
women with pinned-back bobs,
male sea of moustaches, brilliantine.
Most ladies featuring Mum’s Auntie Doris,
nod to fashion in court-heeled shoes,
but all in flowered pinnies,
un art-moderne as brick walls …
and not a bit of lace in sight.

We were even lucky enough to hear about what inspired Deborah to write such a beautiful poem;

The Walker’s Workers poem came from an image in a photograph of 1932, and the contrast between the pinnies and plain-dress of the workers, and those gowns constructed from their lace and modelled by elegant women really struck-home.”

We hope that you thoroughly enjoyed your experience of the Nottingham Festival of words, and Deborah’s stunning reading at Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop.

Our next blog post will feature Deborah’s poem “Clocking-in

Poetry Readings for the Nottingham Festival of Words at Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop

When the evening finally arrived for one of Debbie Bryan’s much anticipated contributions to the Nottingham Festival of Words, those whom attended were not disappointed.

Tea and cakes were served from fine china, with a dash of whisky, and guests were free to explore Debbie’s creative space and the many stunning pieces of art, craft and design at the shop.

When the hour came for Nottingham poet Deborah Tyler-Bennett for recite “Love and Lace”, appropriately positioned in front of original draughtsman’s lace drawings, the audience were in for a treat. The theme of lace and Nottingham is one shared by Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop, as traditional British making techniques have been part of the inspiration of Debbie Bryan’s work.

New creative friendships have lead to the introduction of no- to-be-missed Poetry Tea Parties at Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop. There is even the talk of the shop having our own Poet-in-Residence! Look out for out forthcoming summer date.

If you’d like to look back at the evening, or if you were unable to attend on the night, you can see what you missed in the video below:

The Poetry of Fashion

The combination of great writing and great fashion could not be found in any better place than in the works of poet Deborah Tyler-Bennett.

This highly talented woman says that her work is influenced by vintage fashion, which is an influence shared by Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop. Deborah looked picture perfect 1950's when she joined Alison Knox and Tina Bettison for a Flash Mob Poetry reading at our shop on 8th December, which was a huge success!
Here is what Decorah had to say about her part in the Nottingham Festival of Words:

As a Nottinghamshire born writer, it’s always nice to be asked to do something connected with the city of Nottingham. Many of my poems are set in and around the county, featuring some characters based on ancestors in the hosiery-trade who worked as stockingers. So, being Writer in Residence for Nottingham’s first Festival of Words provides me with a wonderful opportunity, both to write about the city and its lace-making/ textile heritage, and to inspire others around the theme of Love and Lace.

When asked to write a short poem on the theme to go on a postcard for the festival, I thought of lace’s delicacy, its ‘heirloom’ qualities, but I also thought of the hard-graft of making it.”

Deborah’s eagerly await poetry reading will be will be on Friday 15th February from 5pm to 7pm, during the pop-up tea room with Designer Lucy Renshaw, so this is an evening not to miss!

Lucy will be available to sign copies of her fantastic Textile Handbook, a step by step guide to up-cycling, re-cycling and re-crafting. Preparing for the New York trade show!

27th - 30th January
Stand 2269 : British Jewellery & Giftware International : New York International Gift Fair : Jacob Javits Centre. New York : USA.

International tradeshows have been common practice for Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop since 2007, and have always been a highly successful venture.

The stunning pieces you’ll find at this event have all been created with precision in a tranquil studio in Nottingham’s historic lace market. The work that is created in Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop is following in for footsteps of Nottingham’s forefathers, and aims to encapsulate the proud history of the Nottingham Lace industry and of great British design and craftsmanship.

The award winning designer, Debbie Bryan, uses only the highest quality raw materials to create original knitted and felted fabrics, which are then transformed into beautiful and distinctive scarves and corsages.

Other gorgeous accessories that you’ll find at Debbie Bryan’s stand in New York are the unique and extraordinary hand-cast resin brooches. These stunning accessories have been created using curious materials, which represent nostalgia, a by-gone era and the history of British culture. Brooches can include vintage photographs, ceramics, old currency, Nottingham Lace and many other materials.

A fabric project supported by the Future Factory at Nottingham Trent University enabled Debbie Bryan to work with a specialist knit company in 2012, which resulted in a new luxury collection of scarves, knitted in cotton, mohair and lamb’s wool.

These beautiful pieces are knitted on 100-year old traditional knitting machinery, which sit along-side the antique hand frame machines designed in 1589 by Reverend William Lee, inventor of first knitting frame. The year 2012 marked a centenary of business for our industry partner - a 4th generation family owned knit specialist.

We believe that our offer to the international audience is more than just stunning design and quality materials, what we’re also offering is a part of British history, celebrating a rich culture and treasured making techniques.
As this event Debbie Bryan will be launching an accessories collection, along with a new wholesale Heritage range of lace knits and tableware, which we’re really exciting to be sharing. We hope to be seeing lots of new and familiar faces soon!

There are many more posts to come which we hope will get you excited about some of the wonderful events with Debbie Bryan during the Nottingham Festival of Words, such as a pop-up book shop with Lowdham Bookcase, a talk at Nottingham Trent University’s Newton building with Hannah Lobley of Paperworks and the aforementioned Peter Clayton, an altered book workshop with Manon de Moor, more from Debbie Brayn Heritage, as well as works from many talented writers, designer and artists, such as Penelope Ruth. Watch this space!

NEW Tatting Lace Workshops

We’re very excited about our upcoming Tatting Lace Workshops, which are set to teach you a wonderful craft, fashioned by the Royal family throughout British history. Luxurious and delicate, handmade lace was the essential accessory for Queen Victoria herself !

Lace is part of the proud heritage of Nottingham, a material which has inspired the collections of many of our designers, and something which we’re celebrating under the season of LACE:HERE:NOW.

The workshops will be held by paper artist and tatting expert Phiona Richards, as seen on Kirstie Allsop’s Handmade Britain. Phiona, who was a big hit at our Speed Craft event in 2012 and will be returning to Speed Craft 2013 on 27th April.

Phoina will be teaching you how to ‘flip’ and make the basic knots required to produce something lovely to take away from the day.

The date of these workshops is Saturday 9th March;
* Tatting Lace 10 – 1pm, £45
* Tatting Lace 2- 5pm, £45

This is a small workshop for 4 people. To book your place please call us or call in person to Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop. Workshop places can also be purchased as gift cards to give to a friend! So there’s no need to come alone, share an experience with someone special.
