The Poetry of Fashion

The combination of great writing and great fashion could not be found in any better place than in the works of poet Deborah Tyler-Bennett.

This highly talented woman says that her work is influenced by vintage fashion, which is an influence shared by Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop. Deborah looked picture perfect 1950's when she joined Alison Knox and Tina Bettison for a Flash Mob Poetry reading at our shop on 8th December, which was a huge success!
Here is what Decorah had to say about her part in the Nottingham Festival of Words:

As a Nottinghamshire born writer, it’s always nice to be asked to do something connected with the city of Nottingham. Many of my poems are set in and around the county, featuring some characters based on ancestors in the hosiery-trade who worked as stockingers. So, being Writer in Residence for Nottingham’s first Festival of Words provides me with a wonderful opportunity, both to write about the city and its lace-making/ textile heritage, and to inspire others around the theme of Love and Lace.

When asked to write a short poem on the theme to go on a postcard for the festival, I thought of lace’s delicacy, its ‘heirloom’ qualities, but I also thought of the hard-graft of making it.”

Deborah’s eagerly await poetry reading will be will be on Friday 15th February from 5pm to 7pm, during the pop-up tea room with Designer Lucy Renshaw, so this is an evening not to miss!

Lucy will be available to sign copies of her fantastic Textile Handbook, a step by step guide to up-cycling, re-cycling and re-crafting. Preparing for the New York trade show!

27th - 30th January
Stand 2269 : British Jewellery & Giftware International : New York International Gift Fair : Jacob Javits Centre. New York : USA.

International tradeshows have been common practice for Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop since 2007, and have always been a highly successful venture.

The stunning pieces you’ll find at this event have all been created with precision in a tranquil studio in Nottingham’s historic lace market. The work that is created in Debbie Bryan Studio & Shop is following in for footsteps of Nottingham’s forefathers, and aims to encapsulate the proud history of the Nottingham Lace industry and of great British design and craftsmanship.

The award winning designer, Debbie Bryan, uses only the highest quality raw materials to create original knitted and felted fabrics, which are then transformed into beautiful and distinctive scarves and corsages.

Other gorgeous accessories that you’ll find at Debbie Bryan’s stand in New York are the unique and extraordinary hand-cast resin brooches. These stunning accessories have been created using curious materials, which represent nostalgia, a by-gone era and the history of British culture. Brooches can include vintage photographs, ceramics, old currency, Nottingham Lace and many other materials.

A fabric project supported by the Future Factory at Nottingham Trent University enabled Debbie Bryan to work with a specialist knit company in 2012, which resulted in a new luxury collection of scarves, knitted in cotton, mohair and lamb’s wool.

These beautiful pieces are knitted on 100-year old traditional knitting machinery, which sit along-side the antique hand frame machines designed in 1589 by Reverend William Lee, inventor of first knitting frame. The year 2012 marked a centenary of business for our industry partner - a 4th generation family owned knit specialist.

We believe that our offer to the international audience is more than just stunning design and quality materials, what we’re also offering is a part of British history, celebrating a rich culture and treasured making techniques.
As this event Debbie Bryan will be launching an accessories collection, along with a new wholesale Heritage range of lace knits and tableware, which we’re really exciting to be sharing. We hope to be seeing lots of new and familiar faces soon!

Stella Corrall lit up our Christmas, now she’s lighting up Nottingham!

You will definitely remember Stella Corrall from our Christmas Heart of Heritage this December in the Flying Horse Walk. Her lighting pieces added a beautiful atmosphere and warmth to our vintage theme festive window, and now, she’s changing the mood of Nottingham Light Night!

Stella’s company, Lucentia Design, is an eco-business with a strong set of moral principles, and on Friday 8th February, Stella is our resident maker and will be shining a light on the ethos and moral framework behind her stunning designs, such as the importance of recycling and being environmentally aware.

We will also be showcasing lighting collections from Lucy Renshaw, Laura Oliva, Hannah Nunn and Nottingham Eco-designer Sarah Turner. If you’d like Stella, Debbie and our other talented designers to light up your night, be sure to visit our Lace Market shop on 8th February, we’re open until 9pm!
