We're especially loving the laser etched digital print by second year Decorative Arts student, Claire Bradshaw (top centre).

We were very excited to launch the Nottingham Festival of
Words at Debbie Bryan’s Studio & Shop on the 18th October. Being
a designer who is very inspired by the proud heritage of Nottingham's Lace Market, Debbie is collaborating with several local artists and writers to
explore their inspiration, and how narrative can be visually represented in craft, art and design.
Taking place under the LACE:HERE:NOW season, the Nottingham
Festival of Words is an event celebrating literature, design and creativity,
and Debbie’s contribution is running from 18th October 2012 to 7th
April 2013.
The atmosphere was electric as Peter Clayton from the Leicester Print Workshop conjured up curiosity with the creative potential of this festival and gave a preview of the
great work to come.
Debbie Bryan and the Leicester
Print Workshop will be showcasing the prints of three artists; Sally Hill,
Peter Clayton and Sat Kalsi whose works are inspired by the LACE:HERE:NOW
season and the theme of love. The connection between art and words can be seen
in the collections by Phiona Richards of Rare Notions, Emma Bamford of Penelope
Ruth, and Hannah Lobley of Paperwork.
Debbiewill
also be collaborating with The Bookcase during this festival and presenting books
which have been written in, or inspired by, Nottingham. Every month the
creative theme will be directed towards a different source of inspiration; transport,
sport, writers, architecture and food.
Two Altered Book workshops will be held on Saturday 16th
February 2013 by Manon de Moor, which intend help you to make a very personal
journal/travel-book/diary out of an old hardback book, together with an
introduction on how to create a poem or text based on the festival's 'Love, Lace
and Letters' theme. These workshops will be held 10 - 1pm and 2-5pm and cost
just £30.
There will also be a pop-up Tea Room in Debbie Bryan’s Studio
& Shop on 15th February. Author and light designer Lucy Renshaw
will be in the studio constructing some of her colourful and quirky lamp
shades. If you’re coming into town on route to see poet Alice Oswald’s most
recent work; Memorial, at the Lakeside Arts Centre, visit Debbie Bryan’s Studio
& Shop to warm up with a pot of tea. Surrounded by the works of fantastic
designers, as well as lace tablecloths and bone china, our pop-up tea room is a
great way to begin a superb evening of poetry.
In addition to all of this, presentations will be given by award-winning environmental
paper artist Hannah Lobley and acclaimed printmaker Peter Clayton in Nottingham
Trent University’s Newton building, lecture theatre 6, Saturday 16th at 10am. Both
artists will be describing the inspiration behind their work, a showcase of
which will also be on display in the Newton foyer.
We hope to see you excited, inspired and fascinated as the
Nottingham Festival of Words reveals the narrative behind the creation and
production of these beautiful design collections.
It's been a busy few weeks, and last weekend's Speed Craft was a fantastic finale... but from now until Christmas, we're just enjoying being in the shop, taking time to soak in all the wonderful collections! Our designers are a talented bunch! And here's a couple of great photos to give a taster...
Speed craft is here! We've got off to a great start at the Galleries of Justice... here's a quick action shot of the first round...
Feel like you're missing out?! We've booked another for Spring 2013, on Saturday 27th April... The creative headliners will be announced in the new year, but it promises new ideas and inspirations alongside our usual delicious cakes... Pencil it in your diary now!
One day to go, and one last hello (but by no means
least!) to Glass Maker Stevie Davis who will be with our speed
crafters all day tomorrow...
Construction and manipulation techniques are key
to Stevie's fused glass practice and all work is designed by layering
glass with wire details which Stevie manipulates by hand. The process of wrapping various sections of
glass with wire creates line and texture in the interior and
exterior of the glass. Stevie creates a range of one off sculptural
forms and wall art made using sheet glass, wire grids, metal
inclusions and coloured glass powders and frit. Stevie also
produces hand made glass accessories.
For details on what you could be creating
tomorrow, visit our workshop page.
It's not too late to join! Just give us a ring on

Meet Phiona Richards – Our 5th of 6
designers leading the craft activities this Saturday at Speed Craft!
Phiona is a Paper Artist
who creates sculptures and jewellery from books using traditional
needlework techniques. Having been brought up with a 'make do and
mend' mentality, she collects books near the end of their existance
and transforms them into tactile robust structures.
